the personal' business bank manager? Is it worth it?

Hi fellow Made Simplers.    I like the idea of being able to call on you for some advice.  Does anyone else have the same experience?!  I've been running businesses through the same bank (different branches of one of the big 5 banks) since 1996.  Way back then - to be allocated a 'business banking manager' you had to turnover a certain amount and you knew his or her name.   He kept in touch by phone and came to visit.  The business banking manager was on the ball - got to grips with your business and you felt confident about their advice. Today it's a whole new ball-game and quite frankly, I've all-but decided to withdraw the services of my 'personal' business banking manager.  For the past 5 years I've had more than 5 different managers (the advertising promise for this particular bank is specifically that they don't change their manges for 3 years).  I have no idea who or how to contact them when they change becasue when they do - the take their phone numbers with them.  Believe that one!  Last week I went to close off an old business account (I had sold that business several months back so there was no trading going on).  I phoned half the bank to find out WHO my banking manager was now.  I eventually tracked him down and he said I had to go into the Branch to cancel the account.  I did.  When I got there they said they didn't have the forms and would have them in a few days.  A few days later, this time on a Saturday I went in again.  "Sorry, we cant access that informaton on a Saturday".  Still no forms avaliable - 'they're locked away on Sautrdays'.  Finally I went again and despite the fact that I had to go from  queue to the info desk and back to the queue - success! That probaly took me half a man-day to achieve?  A businss banking manager is supposed to alleviate all the stress to going to the bank etc etc.    Before I give him the big CHOP from my current business..... anything that might change my mind or encourage me to go with my gut feel?  Thanks, Elizabeth

Re: the personal' business bank manager? Is it worth it?

Hi Elizabeth,

As an ex- Bank Manager myself I can share your frustration- these people are not Bank Manager or relationship managers or nothing like it. They cannot make any decisions about your business and it is purely a marketing ploy by the Banks to pretend they are offering you personal service and a sap to their employees by giving them a meaningless title. I became a manager by working my way through the ranks- it took me 13 years which back then was considered fast! I knew all the workings of the branch systems because I had done every job! I often thought it would be lovely to have the wherewithall to set up an old type bank again offering the very services you mention. I think you would make an absolute service by charging fair rates for fair work! Any one interested give me a shout Ha!Ha!

My advice Elizabeth? Dump your relationship manager! you will get more assitance and advice from a check out girl at Tescos!
