Oil prices skyrocketing are a blessing in disguise!
Modified By chrisl on 7/30/2008 2:30:51 PM)

The price of oil has reached ludicrous proportions. But since when was it our God-given right to be entitled to cheap fuel? Ok, we are all aware of the immediate repercussions for the worse but I think we're thinking too small. I consider myself environmentally aware and in my opinion I think it's about time we started thinking about what's best for the future of our planet rather than the immediate effects on the economy.

Read this article in the Knowledge Zone entitled Worried about the escalation of oil prices? Don’t be – it’s a change for the better - someone agrees with me!

Re: Oil prices skyrocketing are a blessing in disguise!

I too welcome the rise in oil prices - and the widely reported increase in gas prices.   It irks me that Centrica and Shell still report billions of pounds profits - yet I understand that a business model whereby they purchase units at 60p and sell at 90p is not a sustainable one - and after all, they are focused on securing their own businesses.  (Perhaps we should be discussing nationalisation - but that's a whole other thread!).

Hopefully we are approaching a huge 'shift' in the way we, asan innovative and adaptable race, source our energy.  I am encouraged by the growing number of wind turbines I see, particularly on industrial estates (and even on the corner of our road).  Personally, I find these aesthetically pleasing on the eye!   And further encouraged by the news that gas guzzlers are out and hybrid sales have exceeded all expectations.

Giving manufacturers and consumers a financial pain point regarding oil - ~(which looks set to be a long term pain point) - will hopefully kickstart a shift into alternative and kinder energy resource - and  reduce our dependence on (or addiction to) oil and the cartel that manage it.

Re: Oil prices skyrocketing are a blessing in disguise!

i agree that rising fossil fuel prices will disencourage reliance on fossil fuels, but i would say that with knock-on effects like the 35% rise in British Gas prices, there needs to be much more infrastructure for/awareness of alternatives for this to realistically drive us toward renewables. the average person living in a block of flats in london can't (or at least very probably won't) use anything else to heat their flat. drives toward efficiency are effective to a certain point but with a year-on-year winter heating bill rise of almost 90%, there just isn't a viable alternative in place for the majority of consumers yet. so while energy prices for us will go up, the decision of whether or not to invest in wind or wave or even nuclear is not one that we are in a position to take, yet we are paying for it, and somehow, the energy companies are making record (£1bn) profits from it.
