A large number of new business ventures are being set up by people over the age of 50, new research has shown. The importance of the silver entrepreneur was revealed in a study carried out by Kingston University’s small business research centre on behalf of Yellow Pages. According to the report, one out of every six new businesses is created by someone aged 50 or over. Older entrepreneurs have a number of motives for setting up on their own. Some 39 per cent cited the wish to do something pleasurable; nearly one in three wanted to achieve a better work/life balance; while a quarter enjoyed being their own boss. Helen Stevenson, chief marketing officer of Yell, said: “Our study highlights the crucial contribution over 50s make to the UK economy and demonstrates that senior start-ups aren’t afraid to take a risk by changing career later in life.” Date:26 October 2007
