5 Tips for SMEs in an Economic Slowdown
With much talk about economic downturn and the future being unclear for many SME’s, businesses need to remain positive and proactive to maintain success.Even with a slowdown in the economy it is a reality that many businesses continue to prosper through the worst of recessions. It can be an opportunity for growth for those businesses that think smarter and react quicker. It is important that in these times of uncertainty businesses re-evaluate elements of their business activity, take a step back to reflect and react accordingly. Here are 5 ways that businesses can adjust to improve their fortunes: - Improve your brand experience
If you are noticing that business is already slowing down then you can’t afford to lose any customers. Scrutinize every aspect of your customer’s experience throughout the life-cycle of a sale. Are there any areas that you could improve – are you making it as easy as possible for them to buy, repeat purchase with you. Perhaps offer incentives – two for one for a time limited period.
- Re-asses target audience
Some sectors always have money to spend, whatever the state of the economy. It may be a good time to re-asses your target market. Search out ‘recession proof’ audiences. These are usually government funded organisations – schools, councils etc.
- Win competitors customers
As other businesses batten down the hatches, it could be time to go out and win their customers. Step up your marketing activity and make yourself more visible and attractive than your competitors.
- Emphasize your value message
Many brands promise to deliver value for money, but in times of plenty these messages can easily get sidelined. Now could be the time to emphasise this aspect of your brand and bring it back.
- Price Properly
Don’t over-react to market conditions, understand whether demand is price-sensitive and don’t give profits away.Take control of your company’s future and adapt to your environment. Any adjustments now could prove hugely beneficial in the future. You never know, in time the credit crunch could have a positive influence on your business.
