Only a small proportion of firms in the UK understand the effect they are having on the environment. According to a survey conducted by the Carbon Trust, just 1 per cent of British firms know the extent of their 'carbon footprint'. By contrast, a quarter of businesses claimed to be affected by climate change. Measuring their 'carbon footprint' is critical, the Trust argued, to helping firms reduce emissions and to making the most of the opportunities that climate change has to offer business. While some firms had started the process of cutting carbon emissions, the Trust said that the majority were still ignorant of the environmental impact they are having. Large, public companies were more likely to have taken steps to gauge and reduce their carbon emissions than smaller, private firms. Tom Delay, chief executive of the Carbon Trust, said: "The picture is mixed as businesses are still yet to move in some key areas. By measuring and assessing a business's impact through undertaking a carbon footprinting exercise, a company can better understand where carbon reductions can be made and cost savings achieved."
