So. . .you’ve got a superb idea for a business and now you need to brand it. We all know that how you brand a company has a key influence over how people will perceive it. Therefore, it’s vital to get it right. A LOGO SAYS A THOUSAND WORDS A good logo is important because it embodies the sprit of your company and can convey so much in so little time. In short, your logo speaks volumes about your business. That’s why companies like British Telecom, British Airways and BP spend millions getting theirs right. HOW MY COMPANY LOGO CAME TO LIFE For the past year, I’ve been working on a new business called Win My Time’. The core concept is that the website is “eBay for people” – it allows anyone to sell chunks of their time and choose whether to sell in an auction or straight fee format. When the time came for me to brand this new internet business, I knew I wanted a logo that was powerful, clever, iconic and timeless. MISTAKES TO AVOID I hired a number of reasonably priced designers I found on the net, but that strategy proved to be a false economy when they didn’t come up with anything that really grabbed me. Even though I gave these designers a clear brief (colours to avoid, styles to gravitate to) sometimes it’s difficult to know what you want until you see what you don’t want! FINDING THE BEST OF THE BEST In the end, I thought, “What logos do I love?…” and I began thinking about the ‘Big Brother’ eye and how it’s been so cleverly reinvented every year. Because I ‘ve worked on ‘Big Brother’ in the past, I could easily find out the genius behind the designs – a guy name Daniel Eatock www.eatock.com . I tracked him down and we immediately hit it off. THE ‘EUREKA’ MOMENT Over a period of weeks, Dan came up with the breakthrough of using a clock face as the basis of the logo. At first, the design included a gavel (to signify auctions) but we streamlined it so that the ‘hands’ of the clock represented a ‘tick’ instead. And so the Win My Time logo was born…
