The use of advanced metering by small and medium sized businesses could save up to £300m in energy costs and 2.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions every year, a study by Carbon Trust (CT) has found. In a three year field test of modern metering equipment, CT said that firms who took part typically saved around £1000 a year on their energy bills. The largest savings were seen by multi-site companies and high energy users, it said. Widespread adoption of the technology by UK SMEs could result in cost savings of around £300m across the sector. CT called for the Government to increase incentives for small firms to take up the technology, and new policy measures to accelerate its roll out. "Our trial has shown that advanced meters can help businesses save money and also deliver significant carbon savings for the UK," said Tom Delay, CT chief executive. "There needs to be a structured and sustainable roll out of this important technology to help the UK meet its commitment to cut carbon emissions by 60% by 2050." Date:16 May 2007
