UK businesses should take a leading role in developing and implementing environmentally sustainable practices, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) has said. In a speech to the University of Peking, the ICAEW chief executive Michael Izza said that accountants have an important role to play in helping businesses measure the environmental impact of their activities. "As a profession with a long track record in developing the frameworks which allow for the efficient measurement of financial and non financial information, accountants have an important role to play in helping business deliver," he said. He said that the accountancy profession needed to define the language of sustainability reporting for global business. It should provide the highest quality technical evidence to support sustainable investment, promoting the idea that taking action on environmental issues is good for business. "The steps that Tesco and Marks & Spencer have recently made were cited as examples of how embedding environmental good practice into commercial operations is now not just beneficial for the environment but also for business," the institute said.
